Jim Gaffigan and the Immune System: Laughter versus Stress

Everyone has their favorite comic. While Tim Hawkins “Yoga Pants” has to be my all-time favorite sketch, there is a special place in my heart for Jim Gaffigan. His relatable humor and self-effacing delivery make him a go-to comedian when I need a pick me up. And for good reason, too. There is evidence of a correlation between frequent laughter and an improved immune system. Laughter is a free, easy and enjoyable way to improve overall health: it is often called a “massage for the internal organs”. It reduces stress and improves our mental state. It is believed that those who laugh more often are more able to deal with stressful life event in a positive manner. This article from Mayo Clinic elaborates on the benefits, including organ stimulation, stress and tension relief, improved immune system, pain relief, increased personal satisfaction, and improved mood. So do yourself a favor: trust the science and watch this.
